Chinese Language in China

The lowest-barrier entry point and the most flexible: start any semester, any level, with a placement test on arrival. Many students use it as a bridge year before a degree.

Why this field

What Chinese Language involves, and who it suits

Chinese language study is the lowest-barrier entry point and the most flexible: start any semester, any level, with a placement test on arrival. Many students use it as a bridge year before a degree, and it is the natural route for anyone whose Chinese is not yet at degree level. It is also the most social and the most immediately useful part of studying in China. The language year is where most international students make their network, learn how the country actually works, and decide whether a full degree is worth it.

Where it leads

What the degree is actually for

Common next steps for graduates of this field in China and at home.

One thing to check before you commit. A language certificate alone does not open degree admission — it clears the language bar, but the degree still has its own academic requirements. Treat the language year as preparation, not a qualification in itself.
Questions students actually ask

Straight answers

Any semester. Most universities accept language students year-round with a placement test on arrival, so you do not need to wait for September.
About 12,000–25,000 CNY per year for long-term intensive study, less for short summer or winter courses. Add living costs of 1,200–5,200 CNY a month by city.
Not as credit, but it gets you to the HSK level a Chinese-taught degree requires. Many students do one language year, then enter the degree the next intake.
