Positioning

Why students pick it

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is a joint venture between Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool, and it is the clearest English-medium option in the country that is not simply a Chinese degree with English delivery. Teaching, assessment and the degree itself follow the British model, and graduates receive a University of Liverpool award alongside the Chinese one.

Where it is genuinely strong

Entirely English-medium teaching, with no HSK requirement at any level
A University of Liverpool degree alongside the Chinese award
Business, engineering, computer science and design, taught on a British curriculum
A campus built for international students in the Suzhou Industrial Park

Budget

What a year costs, and what a stipend would cover

Level	Monthly stipend	Verdict in Suzhou
Bachelor's	2,500 CNY	Workable — A 2,500 CNY stipend covers a dorm place and canteen food, but little beyond that.
Master's	3,000 CNY	Comfortable — A 3,000 CNY stipend covers a dorm place and food with room to spare.
PhD	3,500 CNY	Comfortable — A 3,500 CNY stipend covers a dorm place and food with room to spare.

Living cost in Suzhou is CNY 1,700–3,000 per month. A funded student still pays for travel, clothing and anything outside insurance.

Item	Indicative cost	Notes
Tuition	CNY 88,000–93,000 per year	Paid to the university, usually by semester. Scholarship holders have this waived.
Dormitory	CNY 600–1,300 per month	On-campus shared room. A single room costs more and is limited.
Food	CNY 900–1,700 per month	Canteen-based. Cooking or eating out changes this significantly.
Transport and misc	CNY 350–600 per month	Metro, phone, printing, clothes, occasional travel.
Insurance	CNY 800 per year	Student medical insurance, required for registration in most provinces.

The estimate assumes twelve months of living costs, because rent and food continue outside term time. Figures are indicative planning ranges for 2026.

All-in annual estimate: CNY 108,400–129,000. That is tuition plus twelve months of living costs in Suzhou. A full scholarship removes the tuition line and most of the dorm line, which is why the funded and self-funded budgets for the same place look nothing alike.

Admission

What the application has to clear

Requirements by level, plus the one practical caution specific to this university.

Level	Academic requirement	Language requirement	Age guidance (CSC)
Bachelor's	High-school diploma with strong grades in relevant subjects	HSK 4–5 (Chinese) or IELTS 6.0 (English)	Usually under 25 for CSC; universities are more flexible
Master's	Bachelor's degree in a related field, usually GPA 3.0/4.0 equivalent	HSK 5 (Chinese) or IELTS 6.0–6.5 (English)	Usually under 35 for CSC
PhD	Master's degree and a publication or strong research record	HSK 5 (Chinese) or IELTS 6.5 (English)	Usually under 40 for CSC

Age guidance reflects scholarship limits; universities are usually more flexible for self-funded applicants.

Applications: September intake; applications open in the autumn and close in the spring, with early-bird discounts for early payment. Scholarship deadlines are always earlier than admission deadlines, sometimes by two months.

Watch for this: Tuition is at British rather than Chinese levels — roughly three to four times a standard Chinese public university. It is also not a CSC host, so the funding routes that make other Chinese universities affordable do not apply here. Budget it as a UK-style degree.

Funding

How this university is funded

This university is not a CSC Type B host. There is no direct-to-university quota here, so funding has to come from the embassy route (Type A, through the Chinese embassy in your country) or from a provincial or university scheme. Plan the Type A calendar accordingly, because it closes earlier than most admission deadlines.

Local scheme	Covers	Levels	How it is administered
Jiangsu Government Scholarship	Tuition waiver at 50–100% depending on level and ranking	Bachelor / Master / PhD	Often paired with a university top-up; ask the international office.
Jasmine Jiangsu Scholarship	Full or partial funding for postgraduate study	Master / PhD	Separate call from the general provincial scholarship; shorter window.

Municipal and provincial schemes are usually selected by the university after admission, so the application is often a checkbox rather than a separate portal. · All Jiangsu schemes →

University-level award	Level	Covers	Notes
Business schools — MBA merit scholarship	10,000–40,000 CNY off tuition	Tuition	Often tied to GMAT/GRE, work experience or an interview score.

University awards are frequently decided at admission and are not always advertised. Ask the international office which ones you are automatically considered for.
