Why students end up in Shanghai

Fudan covers the comprehensive and medical ground, Shanghai Jiao Tong covers engineering, medicine and business, Tongji is the reference for architecture, civil engineering and vehicle design, and East China Normal covers education and Chinese language. Four universities, but between them they reach most of the subjects international students actually apply for.

Shanghai's advantage is the seam between the campus and the industry. Finance in Lujiazui, biotech in Zhangjiang, automotive in Jiading, design and media across the former concession districts — internships exist in the subject you are studying rather than adjacent to it. It is also the city where a student can function in English for months at a time, which is either a comfort or a trap depending on whether you intend to learn Chinese.

After graduation

Work and industry

The densest concentration of foreign corporate headquarters in mainland China, plus the finance, biotech and design clusters. Internships are formal, competitive and usually paid. The catch is that the same internship is available to local students who do not need visa paperwork, so start looking a semester earlier than you would elsewhere.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Living

Climate, and getting there

SeasonTypical rangeWhat to expect
Spring (Mar–May)10–22°CWarms slowly and rains often. The plum rain season arrives mid-June and lasts three to four weeks.
Summer (Jun–Aug)28–38°CHot, humid and long. Air conditioning is not optional.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)15–25°CComfortable and dry. The best window for arriving.
Winter (Dec–Feb)2–8°CDamp cold with no district heating. Indoor temperatures can feel worse than a Beijing winter at −5°C.

Transport

Pudong for long-haul, Hongqiao for domestic and regional. Hongqiao is also the high-speed rail hub: 30 minutes to Suzhou, an hour to Hangzhou, four and a half hours to Beijing. The metro is extensive and runs late. Taxis are expensive relative to the rest of the country.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

No central heating, and the winter damp makes rooms colder than the thermometer suggests. Budget for a heater and an electric blanket, or check whether the dormitory provides them. Rent is the highest in the country: an off-campus one-bedroom outside the centre starts around 2,500 CNY and climbs quickly toward the riverside districts.

FAQ

Questions specific to Shanghai

2,800–5,200 CNY is the realistic range, the highest of the eighteen cities we cover. The floor assumes a university dormitory and canteen food. The ceiling assumes a small rented flat and eating out regularly.
For finance, consulting, biotech and design, yes — the job density is unmatched. For manufacturing, hardware and internet platform engineering, Shenzhen and Hangzhou now compete directly and cost less to live in.
Not for English-taught programmes, which are numerous at master's level. Chinese-taught degrees typically ask for HSK 5, and some competitive programmes ask for HSK 6 with a score threshold rather than just the level.
