Why students end up in Hefei

University of Science and Technology of China is the whole story, and it is a research university first and a city second. USTC is one of the few Chinese institutions genuinely competitive at the frontier of basic science: physics, chemistry and mathematics sit alongside computer science, artificial intelligence and a deep engineering base. The city is the capital of Anhui, inland and inexpensive, and now the seat of a national science centre that pulls in quantum-information, semiconductor and AI laboratories.

The trade-off is exactly that research focus. Hefei is not a cosmopolitan place; daily life runs in Mandarin, the international community is small, and the university expects a great deal of its students. If your target is a frontier science or engineering subject, the environment is exceptional. If you want a city experience or a broad choice of programmes, it is the wrong location.

After graduation

Work and industry

The national science centre, semiconductor and AI laboratories, and a growing local technology base. Salaries are below the coast and the international hiring market is small; most graduates move to Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen for work rather than staying locally.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

The city is domestic-facing and English is limited outside campus, so basic Mandarin is effectively required from arrival. The university is demanding and research-oriented rather than a broad liberal-arts environment; students who wanted variety in courses or nightlife tend to feel the narrowness.

FAQ

Questions specific to Hefei

Yes, if your subject is science, computer science or engineering — the research environment is exceptional for China. If you want a city with international life or a wide range of programmes, it is not the right place, and you should look at Shanghai or Nanjing.
1,500–2,600 CNY per month, roughly a third of Shanghai for the same student lifestyle. A scholarship stipend goes considerably further here than on the coast.
Not for the degree — many master's and doctoral programmes are English-taught. For daily life, basic Mandarin is effectively required outside campus, as it is in most Chinese cities outside Shanghai and Shenzhen.
