Why students end up in Beijing

Beijing holds eight of the universities we cover, and they are not a random sample. Tsinghua and Peking anchor the technical and comprehensive end; Beihang covers aerospace and software; Beijing Institute of Technology covers automation and vehicle engineering; Normal University is the reference point for education, psychology and teaching Chinese as a foreign language; Language and Culture University exists specifically to teach Chinese to foreigners and has the deepest curriculum for it; Capital Medical University and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine cover western and traditional medicine respectively.

That density is the real argument for Beijing. If your target is computer science, engineering, economics, international relations or Chinese language teaching, there is a top-five programme in this city for every one of those. You do not have to compromise on the subject to get the location, or the other way round.

What a month costs in Beijing

One student, CNY. The total assumes university accommodation; the private-rent line is there because it is the number that changes the answer.

After graduation

Work and industry

Central SOE headquarters, the large internet platforms, foreign corporate China offices, media and the diplomatic circuit all sit here. Internships are plentiful and competitive in equal measure. Note that an internship on a student visa needs to be arranged through the university and reported; informal paid work is not permitted and is checked.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Living

Climate, and getting there

SeasonTypical rangeWhat to expect
Spring (Mar–May)8–22°CDry and windy. Occasional dust days in March and April; air quality is worst in this window.
Summer (Jun–Aug)25–35°CHot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Air conditioning is standard in dormitories.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)10–22°CThe best three months of the year. Clear, dry, comfortable.
Winter (Dec–Feb)−8–5°CDry cold with district heating indoors, so rooms are warm even when it is well below freezing outside.

Transport

Two airports (Capital and Daxing) with direct long-haul routes. Beijing South and Beijing West run high-speed services to Shanghai in about four and a half hours and to most provincial capitals in between. The metro covers the whole city and student cards cut the fare; a bike is faster than a car for most short trips.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

Rent is the single variable that breaks budgets. On-campus dormitory places are cheap but allocated early and not guaranteed in later years. An off-campus single room runs 2,200–5,000 CNY a month, and many landlords will not sign short leases or deal with a foreign passport without a Chinese guarantor.
Funding

Provincial scholarships for Beijing

A tuition waiver does not change what a month costs. The Beijing award reaches students at 8 universities we cover in Beijing, and the monthly figures above are what it has to cover.

FAQ

Questions specific to Beijing

Barely, if you stay in university accommodation. A master's stipend of 3,000 CNY sits inside the 2,500–4,700 CNY monthly range for the city, which means dormitory plus canteen is covered and very little else is. Moving off campus turns a workable budget into a shortfall of 1,500 CNY or more.
Yes for the degree — Tsinghua, Peking, Beihang and others run English-taught master's programmes. Daily life is a different question. Beijing is less English-friendly than the international districts of Shanghai or Shenzhen, and basic Mandarin changes what you can do outside campus.
September is the main intake and where almost all scholarship places sit. A few programmes admit in March, but funding is rarely attached to a spring start, so treat spring as a self-funded option only.
