Harbin Institute of Technology is the reason to consider the city: aerospace, composites, robotics, materials, civil engineering and computer science, all at a level that competes with the coastal flagships, and a long history of hosting government-scholarship students. It is one of the universities that international applicants consistently underestimate because of where it is.
The economics are unmatched. Living costs are the lowest of the eighteen cities here, tuition at HIT is moderate, and a scholarship goes considerably further than it would in Beijing. The cost is climate and distance: winter runs to −25°C as a matter of course, and the city is far from the economic centres where graduates usually look for work.
